The California Pre-Doctoral Program is a statewide program designed to increase the pool of potential faculty by supporting doctoral aspirations of students currently enrolled in the CSU. Each student selected for participation in the Program will become a Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholar and will work closely with an SFSU faculty sponsor to develop an overall Faculty/Student Plan that ultimately leads to enrollment in a doctoral program. In support of the Faculty/Student Plan, the Pre-Doctoral Program will provide: (1) travel funds for the student and faculty sponsor to attend a professional meeting appropriate for the student’s development and/or to visit Ph.D. institutions in the U.S.; (2) opportunity to apply for a fully funded Summer Internship at a doctoral-level institution; and (3) funds for student membership in professional organizations, subscriptions to journals, graduate-school application and test fees, and minor research materials costs.
Applicants who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time of application will be selected on the basis of three major criteria: (1) potential for success in completing a doctoral program, (2) probable effectiveness of the Faculty/Student Plan, and (3) level of economic and educational disadvantage. Students selected as Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholars must be upper-division or masters-degree students who are enrolled at a CSU during Spring 2005 and during one term of the academic year 2005-2006. The program is designed for students interested in obtaining doctoral degrees. Students preparing to enter professional schools in law, medicine, dentistry, or related fields are not eligible.
