Graduate Transition and Credit Transfer Rules
Back to Graduate Program

Below are the rules governing how a graduate student transitions:

  • from the Old Graduate Program dating before the Fall 2004 term
  • to the new Graduate Program which started in Fall 2004 term.

Please read them carefully to see which applies to your case.

  1. Students who were admitted to CONDITIONAL status (which shows up as Conditional-Classified on transcripts) sometime prior to Fall 2004, and who are still in conditional status now, need to meet the requirements of one of our NEW programs in order to file a GAP.

  2. Students who were admitted to Classified status sometime prior to Fall 2004 can file their GAP under EITHER the old or new programs.

  3. Students who were admitted to classified status THIS term should file their GAP under one of the NEW programs.

  4. Students who were admitted to conditional status THIS term must file their GAP under one of the new programs (or whatever is in effect at the time they are admitted to Classified standing).

A maximum of six semester units, which may include any combination extension work, credit by examination and/or transfer work, may be used on the GAP. Matriculated students planning to take coursework elsewhere must obtain permission in advance from both the Computer Science graduate advisor and the instructor of the equivalent SFSU course.
